The Variables of Current for Fishing

There are a lot of variables in offshore fishing that can change throughout the day. Current is one of them and it is the most important variable that an angler can use to his advantage when fishing. Current can be created by wind, boat traffic and generation throughout the dam. Lake of the Ozarks is famous for its phenomenal fishing out deep in the summertime. The current does many things but it can be mind-boggling if you don’t break it down piece by piece.

Spawn
The spawn is a great time of year to fish. It is a time where many of the fish flood the banks and look for good places to spawn. When they spawn it is an awesome process. It seems like it all happens so quickly. Once the fish are done spawning, the males will stay up by the banks and guard the fry, while the females will move off of the bank to the first piece of cover that they can find. The current being pushed through the dam is a very important factor this time of year. It makes the process of the big females wanting to move out to their summertime haunts happen quicker. The fish know that the current is out there and they want to be out in it. The current will speed the process up quicker.

Post Spawn
The post spawn time frame is a very diverse time to fish. You can catch fish doing a lot of different things that fit your confidence level. Whenever the fish get on their offshore places and structure spots is the time that the current is going to have the biggest effect on the fish. The fish out on the points and ledges use the area they reside in as an advantage. They know that when the dam turns on the water that the bait fish hang out in will get pushed through the dam. The fish are able to use that to their advantage and get an easy meal. The fish turn into an aggressive state and you are able to catch them. Great baits to use during these situations are a 10” Zoom Ole Monster worm, Crock O Gator Reaction Jig and a Big Livingston Crankbait like a Deep Impact 18.

Boat Positioning
Boat positioning is a very crucial part of catching these fish. The best way to position the boat is toward the upstream side of the point or the ledge. This allows you to bring your bait with the current. That is the way the fish position themselves because they know that the bait that they are feeding on, such as shad, are going to be coming downstream with the current. There are also sometimes where you are catching a lot of fish and then they quit biting. What do you do then? Changing angles on where you are casting or changing the bait that you are throwing can make a big difference. It will sometimes make inactive fish active again.
