Winter Jig Fishing Tips

Image
The water temperature has dropped well into the 40s and may sometimes be in the 30s on the Lake of the Ozarks and the majority of fishermen have resorted to jerking $25 stickbaits on and around main and secondary points. That’s what you’re supposed to do, right? Not necessarily! This will often work, no doubt. However, don’t overlook some of the best jig fishing of the year. James Dill with Bassing Bob shares with you some of his tips and tricks this week! Hit the Banks During the winter months, bass really school up and tend to relate to certain types of banks and/or areas. The lake becomes much smaller once you key in on these banks. The fish will relate to main lake and creek channels, using them as security and travel paths while holing up for the winter. They simply position themselves on or at the ends of these channels throughout the winter. When water temps are around 39-42°F, the water is the same throughout the lake’s depths so you are likely to find bass from 5-20 f

Game Fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks

Crappie anglers have a blast catching the tasty panfish at Lake of the Ozarks . Known as one of the Midwest’s most popular vacation spots, Lake of the Ozarks also has a reputation of being one of the best fishing lakes in the country. Crappie aren't the only excellent catches you can find at the Lake, however. Our gorgeous and plentiful lake offers a number of different species of game fish all year round. Lake of the Ozarks Hidden Charms Although younger reservoirs appeal to an angler’s eye with flooded timber and undeveloped shorelines, the Lake of the Ozarks entices fishermen with its hidden charms. This 54,000-acre lake lost most of its natural cover when the standing timber was cleared before the lake was formed. New cover has developed over the years as dock owners and anglers have planted brush piles throughout the impoundment. Other fish-holding structure includes steep bluffs, creek channels, humps, and points. Docks provide plenty of shelter for a variety of fish,

Winter Fishing with Shad

Image
In the winter, many cold fronts hit the lake from the northwest. This affects all fish, but it especially hits hard on shad. During this period, shad move deep, but many die. This is good for gamefish because they also slow in the wintertime. The shad die-off is most significant when the water temperature dips below 40 degrees. These fish will slowly sink to the bottom and then flutter up and sink again. The slow flutter of the shad and the flash that they put off attracts all types of gamefish . Luring In Bass Winter bass primarily feed on dying shad in the winter. During winter, bass slow down. These bass are not going to feed on a fast-moving baitfish. Therefore, the fluttering action of a dying shad appeal to them. So, how do you imitate dying shad with lures? A blade bait is a great choice. These lures are fished on a clean bottom, especially off points. Fish this lure by casting parallel to the shore, letting it sink to the bottom, and then lifting the lure and twitching it
